Most plastic composites manufacturing operations generate some emissions of HAPs (hazardous air pollutants) during the application and curing of thermoset resins. The manufacturing of composite products with polyester and vinylester resins and gel coats in particular can release significant amounts of styrene which is a HAP. These emissions are regulated by state and federal air pollution control requirements and most manufacturing facilities are required to obtain a registration or permit from the DEC.
