The Chromium National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants (chrome NESHAP) regulates emissions of hexavalent and trivalent forms of chromium because hexavalent chromium is highly toxic and strongly suspected of causing lung cancer; trivalent chromium, also toxic, may cause decreased lung function after prolonged exposure. Facilities involved in chromium electroplating include hard, decorative and anodizing plating.
